It’s looking more and more like the 2017 Red Sox. Yes, you read that right the first time.
Reports from Spring Training have the Red Sox ready to re-sign free-agent Eduardo Nuñez, who had a strong start in Boston last summer before falling victim to a PCL sprain in the beginning of September. He had an unfortunately memorable moment during Game 1 of the ALDS, when he reinjured his right knee in the first minutes of the game and had to be carried off the field, his face contorted in pain.
Prior to his injury, Nuñez hit 8 homers and 27 RBIs in just 38 games for Boston. His numbers were seriously strong, especially compared to his lackluster teammates, batting .321/.353/.539. He also stole 24 bases last season. It was a great showing for the veteran player, who only has 46 career homers in 669 games.
Nuñez is a utility player who could cover for Red Sox senior player Dustin Pedroia, who is expected to miss at least the first few weeks of the season following surgery on his left knee back in October. Even after Pedroia returns, Nuñez could return to third base or play shortstop or outfield if needed. His below-average defense skills are elevated by his ability to cover so many positions.
Nuñez’s injury did not require surgery, but like many contracts, his will be contingent on a physical. The deal is reportedly one year with an option for 2019.
