It’s official: after years of public debate and months of deliberation, Boston’s Public Improvement Committee has voted to revert Yawkey Way to its former name, Jersey Street. The vote was unanimous.
The petition to change the name was filed by the street’s abutters, and historically, such petitions have almost always been granted. Many former Red Sox employees and players, black and white, were among those who urged the commission to deny the request.
Unfortunately for Yawkey and his family, the change will permanently propagate the allegations that Tom Yawkey was a racist, and cement him in the history books as such.
You can read my original take on the situation.
To those of you in the Yawkey family and Foundation, please know that despite this, the city of Boston is immensely grateful to you for everything you’ve done and continue to do.
