I’ve been wanting to make this announcement for two years now:
girl at the game has a podcast!
Our eponymous podcast debuted its trailer earlier this month, and Episode 1 came out last week! You can listen to it on Spotify and Libsyn, and as soon as Apple approves us, you can bet I’ll be splashing that news all over our social media accounts.
This show is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, and it’s something I was really careful about creating, because I wanted to do it right. That meant finding the right cohost, my friend Alexandra Francisco, of NESN, and making sure that the content we create stays true to the motto of Girl At The Game:
Sports By Women, For Everyone.
This podcast is going to cover all sports, though obviously, each episode will be different, and depending on the time of year, might swing heavier in favor of basketball, baseball, even football.
Each episode will be different, but every one of them will be made thoughtfully. When discussing important, uncomfortable topics such as drug addiction and domestic violence in the sports world, we will do our best to be as sensitive and kind as possible when we have these tough conversations. But we will not shy away from talking about things that matter. And there will also be so much fun, light, and laughter on our show, as Al and I and our guests talk about sports in the casual way you do with your friends. In the words of the legendary SNL character Stefon, “This show has everything.”
And let’s talk about our guest list for a minute. Episode 1 is completely devoted to the OG sports goddess Jessica Mendoza. It was such a joy to reconnect with her after our conversation last summer. And this week, we talk to two more incredible women, one from the world of basketball, another who’s making big moves on the hockey scene. We also have many great men on our guest list, and we can’t wait for you to hear those episodes! And though we wish we could be recording more of these episodes together, in the same physical space, we’re proud and grateful to have the technology to persevere from afar. We hope that in the not-so-distant future, we will be able to come together to record live shows and video content, as well!
But how do you put on a sports podcast without sports? It actually makes more sense than you think. Without actual sporting events to watch, yes, of course, there aren’t games to talk about. But there are still tons of sports fans out there craving content, and we are here to deliver. And without sports, the amazing people who make up sports media have the free time to come on and share their stories.
Right now, it seems like everyone and their grandmothers are launching a podcast, and power to anyone starting a show, because it is a lot of work! This show has been in the works for months, and we’re so proud of the final result. And on a personal note, I am excited for you listeners to get to know me better, because words on a page – or on social media – do not always give someone the full or accurate picture.
It’s a weird, scary time to be alive, and not having sports makes it even more difficult. We hope that this show can be an entertaining distraction for you, as building it has been for us. We hope you’ll tune in, subscribe, and share our show with the sports fans in your life, and we hope you enjoy the Girl At The Game Podcast as much as us girls making it.
Your first show was brilliant, brilliant, brilliant! I will not only listen to everyone, I promise you, I will enjoy each and every show. I respect your opinions because you respect other opinions as well. What a wonderful talent you are!
Thank you, as always, Calan!
The show was fabulous – you both did a great job! The guest was wonderful – what an inspiration she is.
