Per ESPN’s Jeff Passon, Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Randy Arozarena has been detained in Mexico and is now under investigation for alleged domestic violence. He has not been formally charged, but Major League Baseball is investigating now, as well as prosecutors in Mexico’s Yucatan state, where the incident occured.
Arozarena allegedly attempted to take his daughter from his ex-wife and also allegedly attacked his former father-in-law. While the full details of the apparently violent altercation are not yet fully known, there is video footage of part of incident.
In the video, Arozarena tells the crowd that he should be able to be with his daughter, saying that he is the one who gives her everything including comida (food), and zapatos (shoes). You can also hear Arozarena’s daughter in his arms, crying and saying “Dada,” as he attempts to comfort her before the authorities arrive.
According to his agent, Arozarena will likely be held in custody for 48 hours, which is the amount of time allotted for prosecutors to decide if they will level charges under Mexican law.
I won’t be ending this article with his slash line from the season, his career numbers, or talking about his postseason performance. None of those things matter right now. What matters is a thorough investigation and the safety of his child and family.
