Sometimes you just need a really big win. And in tonight’s makeup game against the Baltimore Orioles, that’s exactly what the Red Sox got. They stole 5 bases, had 10 hits, and scored 6 runs on their way to a 6-2 victory over Baltimore. It was almost a shutout.
Free from the threat of having to face Sean Manaea and the A’s for the rest of the season, the Red Sox played like it was early April again. Hopefully, they’ll continue to do so.
Mookie Betts had 3 stolen bases, the most in any game in his career. He continues to lead the majors in most things, and don’t forget that Orioles manager Buck Showalter called him ‘the best right-fielder he’d ever seen’ after the Sox swept them last month.
JD Martinez hit a 2-run homer in the first inning for the second straight night, tying Mookie Betts at 13 home runs apiece. They were tied for MLB-high in both homers and RBIs for a few innings until David Price gave Manny Machado his 14th homer of the season.
Not to be outdone, Xander Bogaerts also homered tonight. That’s not deja vu; he and JD both homered in last night’s win, too.
Rafael Devers had probably the best defensive play of his career, making a catch and wild throw to Hanley to get Machado out at first.
And David Price. I’m so happy to be able to compliment David Price. Tonight, he was the David Price we’ve been paying for the last two years: dominant, enduring, and calm. He pitched his first complete game since 2016 and didn’t allow an extra-base hit until the 9th inning. He had a slightly worrisome moment in the 9th, when, with 2 outs and 2 strikes, he gave up a 2-run homer to team tool Manny Machado. But after that, it was all over.
The Red Sox improve to 30-14, and continue to have the most wins in MLB.
